Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) held its rollout ceremony last month at their Sacheon facility for the first production unit of the supersonic KF-21 Boramae fighter jet. Marking the culmination of a 25-year development program, the mass production of the KF-21 fighter jet begins a new chapter in South Korea’s defense industry.

Mass production of the KF-21 is a milestone, transitioning the country from experimental development to sustained manufacturing. This change will reduce South Korea’s dependence on foreign combat aircraft suppliers, signified by their capability of independently designing, manufacturing, and exporting advanced fighter jets.

South Korea’s president, Lee Jae Myung, attended the ceremony, sharing that “the success of the KF-21 means more than just a strengthening of our national defense; it signifies that Korea has secured a new driving force to compete proudly with the world’s leading defense powerhouses.” He added that the fighter jet’s “outstanding performance, low maintenance costs, and scalability of the platform” have led to “immense interest” from other countries.

The new fighter jet is able to reach speeds of Mach 1.8 and carry 7.7 tons of weaponry on board. The aircraft will begin service in the second half of this year once they are delivered to the Republic of Korea Air Force, RoKAF.

VPT is proud to have parts on board this mission. We congratulate everyone involved with its current and future success.
