VPT, Inc Celebrates 25th Anniversary

BLACKSBURG, VA, September 12, 2018 – VPT, Inc., a HEICO company (NYSE:HEI.A) (NYSE:HEI), celebrates its milestone 25th Anniversary this year. Throughout the last quarter century, VPT has grown to become a global leader in providing power conversion solutions for use in avionics, military, space, and industrial applications, with an extensive range of award-winning DC-DC converters, EMI filters, and associated products.

VPT was founded in 1993 when CEO Dr. Dan Sable joined two other engineers – Fred Lee, former director of the Virginia Tech Center for Power Electronics, and Gary Hua to form the company. In the 25 years since it first began as a three-engineer start-up known as Virginia Power Technologies, Inc., VPT has seen significant and consistent growth in size and sales, regularly expanding product lines, as well as the 2013 addition of VPT Rad, a 5000 square-foot comprehensive radiation laboratory and test services facility.

VPT Introduces Radiation Hardened Point of Load Converters

BLACKSBURG, VA, June 27, 2018 – VPT, Inc. (VPT®), a HEICO company (NYSE:HEI.A) (NYSE:HEI), today announced the availability of its SVPL Series of space-qualified point of load DC-DC converters. Covering an input voltage range of 3.1 to 13.2 V and available in 6, 9, and 12 A output surface-mount options, the SVPL products are designed specifically for space applications facing harsh radiation environments while requiring low voltages and tight regulation for high-performance processors.

The SVPL Series use Renesas’ ISL7000x family of rad-hard synchronous buck regulators to provide high power density, fast transient response, and up to 94% efficiency. The ISL7000x bare-die ICs are characterized for Total Ionizing Dose (TID) of 100krad(Si), including Enhanced Low Dose Rate Sensitivity (ELDRS), and they are immune to destructive Single Event Effects (SEE) with Linear Energy Transfer (LET) of 86.4 MeV-cm2/mg. The complete SVPL Series of converters are characterized for TID of 100krad(Si), including ELDRS, and SEE performance to 85 MeV-cm2/mg, per VPT’s DLA-approved Radiation Hardness Assurance (RHA) plan.

“The SVPL point of load converters have a high radiation tolerance, particularly regarding Single-Event Transients (SETs),” said Brandon Witcher, Senior Design Engineer for VPT. “The product designs minimize the external capacitance needed to limit SET magnitudes to the levels required by modern rad-hard digital electronics, which is especially important as digital power rail tolerances continue to shrink.”

“We are delighted VPT adopted our Intersil brand of bare-die synchronous buck regulators for their SVPL Series,” said Philip Chesley, Vice President, Industrial Analog and Power Business Division, Renesas Electronics Corporation. “The highly integrated ISL7000x devices are built on six decades of spaceflight product development and leadership.”

Additional features of the SVPL Series include high power density, output enable control, low output noise, overcurrent protection, and external synchronization to other converters or system clocks. Full power operation of the SVPL Series is rated for -55° C to +125° C.

Wide Input Voltage Range Rad Hard DC-DC Converters for Space

November 30, 2017 –  Today VPT announced that its SVR Series isolated DC-DC converters now offer an 18 to 40 V input range. The radiation-hardened SVR series of DC-DC converters is available in single and dual outputs and has been characterized to Total Ionizing Dose (TID) to 100 krad(Si), including Enhanced Low Dose Rate Sensitivity (ELDRS), and Single Event Effects (SEE) performance to 85 MeV-cm2/mg.

All SVR Series isolated DC-DC converters from VPT feature a wide input voltage range of 18 to 40, with a 50 V transient operation. The SVR Series isolated converters are highly efficient and utilize VPT’s proprietary radiation immune magnetic feedback technology. Features of the series include input undervoltage lockout, output soft start, current limit and short circuit protection. Additionally, the SVR Series is rated for full power operation up to 125° C.

“The demands of the space market continue to expand and change,” stated Monty Pyle, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for VPT. “Now more customers are seeking rad-hard solutions that require up to 40 V input, without the need to meet the stringent Aerospace TOR and MIL-HBK-1547 derating requirements. VPT Expands its VXR High-Reliability Line

BLACKSBURG, VA, June 6, 2017 – VPT, Inc. (VPT®), a HEICO company (NYSE:HEI.A) (NYSE:HEI), today released its dual output VXR Series DC-DC converters to augment its offering of advanced high-reliability COTS products. Optimized for a broad range of programs from military ground vehicles to commercial and military aircraft, the VXR Series products feature wide input voltage ranges and advanced packaging technology for superior operation in harsh environments. The VXR Series now includes both single and dual output offerings from 7 Watts to 100 Watts as well as 2 to 20 Amp EMI filters.

The VXR Series dual output DC-DC converters feature two independently controlled and isolated outputs which provide zero cross-regulation. Each output can be configured as positive, negative or stacked allowing for a broad range of output voltage configurations.  Additionally, the output voltages can be ordered as unmatched pairs as a standard product option providing a vast range of flexibility within an overall power system design.

VPT Releases High Temperature Product Line

HTD Series Hybrid DC-DC Converters Designed for Extreme Environments up to 185°C

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – May 10, 2016 – VPT, Inc. (VPT®), a HEICO company (NYSE:HEI.A) (NYSE:HEI), released the HTD Series of DC-DC converters at the iMAPS International Conference on High Temperature Electronics, HiTEC 2016. The HTD Series of DC-DC converters, leveraging VPT’s high reliability power supply design heritage, is specifically designed for harsh and extreme temperature environments including downhole oil and gas, MWD/LWD and wireline logging tools, aircraft engine electronics and other industrial applications requiring reliable operation in high temperatures.

The HTD isolated 1.5 Watt DC-DC converter operates from -55°C to 155°C and the HTD non-isolated DC-DC converters operate from -55°C to 185°C. Each model has dual outputs and is designed using thick film hybrid microcircuit technology, bare semiconductor die integrated with passive components and thick film conductors
on a ceramic substrate. Within the HTD design, component-attach and die bonding are optimized for high temperature life, and hermetic metal packaging protects internal components for long-term reliability.

Featuring VPT’s proprietary six-sided encapsulated package with an integral metalized EMI shield, the VPT250 Series is fully compatible with aqueous cleaning processes and is specifically intended for programs with harsh environments such as severe shock, vibration and thermal stresses.

The epoxy packaging allows for aqueous cleaning processes often required in higher volume circuit board production applications. Additionally, the epoxy encapsulated devices have integral metalized EMI shielding and withstand harsh environments including shock, vibration and thermal cycling.

The VPT Series is designed specifically for military vehicles, weapons, shipboard, avionics and many other high-reliability applications. The full line of DC-DC converters, EMI filters and accessory products are derived from proven military heritage designs for rugged duty in demanding environments. The series is tested to MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-883, and JESD22. Additionally, the devices are designed with wide input voltage ranges per MIL-STD-704 and MIL-STD-1275.

U.S. Export Reform Provides Boost to Space Industry Internationally

VPT Space Qualified, Radiation Hardened DC-DC Converters Now Available Globally with Significantly Reduced Export Restrictions  

BLACKSBURG, VA, September 17, 2014 – Recent changes to U.S. Export Administration Regulations have meant that VPT® Inc., a HEICO company (NYSE:HEI.A) (NYSE:HEI), has been able to make available its radiation hardened, space qualified electronics parts to non-embargoed international markets without ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) export restrictions.

VPT’s high-reliability DC-DC converters and accessory products are used by the most prominent global aerospace and space organizations, including NASA, Boeing, BAE Systems, European Space Agency (ESA), and The Airbus Group. Its 30krad SV Series of space qualified products that were previously controlled through ITAR are now classified as EAR99 and eligible for export without an export license. Additionally, its 100krad SVR Series of space qualified products are now assigned under the Export Control Classification Number 9A515e. With few exceptions, this classification allows for export to 36 countries including France, Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, and Japan without an export license (EAR §742.6).

The 5,000 square-foot Chelmsford, Massachusetts facility, formerly known as Si-REL, provides specialized environments and equipment for evaluating electronics used in applications where ionizing radiation can degrade device performance. VPT Rad offers turn-key solutions at both High Dose Rate (HDR) with its TID (Total Ionizing Dose) GC-200 irradiator and Low Dose Rate (LDR) Broad Beam TID irradiation for Enhanced Low Dose Rate Sensitivity (ELDRS) analysis. Additionally, the facility services the radiation needs of the biomedical manufacturing market.

The VPT Rad facility meets the requirements of MIL-STD-750 and MIL-STD-883; and has approved Source Suitability from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). The facility also services radiation test needs for customers and programs outside the U.S. using European Space Components Coordination (ESCC) 22900 compliant test methods.

Official Standard Microcircuit Drawings Issued for VPT’s Entire Rad Hard DC-DC Converters and EMI Filters Series

BLACKSBURG, VA, Nov. 7, 2013 – VPT Inc., a HEICO company (NYSE:HEI.A) (NYSE:HEI), announces the release of Standard Microcircuit Drawings (SMDs) by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) for VPT’s entire SVR Series of radiation hardened DC-DC converters, point of load converters, and EMI filters. VPT’s SVR Series products were developed specifically for the most extreme requirements of space systems.

The SVR Series, which includes 24 modules in seven product families, is suited for use in LEO, MEO, GEO, deep space and launch vehicle programs and was initially introduced in May, 2013. SVR Series products feature maximum levels of radiation hardening with a Total Ionizing Dose (TID) of 100 krad(Si) and SEE of 85 MeV-cm2/mg. The SVR Series is based on space-proven heritage designs and available qualified to MIL-PRF-38534 Class H and Class K.  These are the first power conversion products commercially available that are designed and manufactured in accordance with Aerospace Corporation’s Technical Operating Report (TOR) requirements for space power systems.

The SVR Series performance in space programs is guaranteed through the use of radiation hardened semiconductor components, radiation lot acceptance testing (RLAT) of non-hardened components, and analysis. of a new point of load power converter designed and manufactured for use in the extreme environment of space. The new SVGA0515 Series point of load DC-DC converter is now qualified to MIL-PRF-38534 Class H and Class K by the Defense Logistics Agency.  The SVGA delivers up to 50W of output power, is radiation hardened to 100 krads (Si) including Enhanced Low Dose Rate Sensitivity (ELDRS), and is characterized to SEE of 85 MeV-cm2/mg.

The SVGA Series is the latest addition to VPT’s existing line of space DC-DC converters. The SVGA functions as a non-isolated,
regulated buck converter that steps down the voltage at the point of use in a distributed power system. From a single, small size, high current package, this module saves significant board space, weight, and cost for power systems headed for LEO, MEO, GEO, and deep space missions.

“To reduce weight and component cost, distributed power systems are relying more on smaller, less expensive point of load
converters used in conjunction with the larger, traditional, isolated DC-DC converters.
